Metalsmith Brigitte Clavette received her Bachelors of Fine Arts from the Nova Scotia College of Art And Design in Halifax in 1980, where she majored in Jewellery. Her introduction to metal came as a direct result of taking printmaking at NSCAD. The printmaking studio's cooper and zinc plates fascinated her and influenced her love of surface. When she graduated she opened up a studio in St Andrews, NB where she created mostly one kind of body ornaments. Brigitte's love of the medium lead her to explore concepts and work through larger forms such as vessels and sculptures. In addition to being a jewellery designer she has studied and researched silversmith techniques and advanced construction techniques to apply to her "hollowware". The New Brunswick Collage of Craft And Design is her second home. Joining the faculty in1985 she quickly became not only a teacher but also the Studio Head of Jewellery/Metal Arts. She developed the jewellery program for the Dieppe Community College and served as acting head for one year at the Nova Scotia College of Aft And Design. She has exhibited throughout the Maritime Provinces, Quebec, British Columbia, and around the world. She has been a guest speaker at many conferences, including the opening of the Canadian Craft Museum in Vancouver, BC. Every summer she teaches sliversmithing courses at the Halbiurton School of the Arts in Ontario and has taught at the Nunavut Arctic College. In 2002, she received the Kjeld and Erica Deichmann Award for Excellence in Craft from the province of New Brunswick. Brigitte is the recipient of numerous grants such as creation grants from the NB Arts Board, and the Canada Council for the Arts. She is a member of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts. |
